Ch.1
The Start
The thick scent off blood swept through the area. Snarls echoed off the buildings, along with whines and barks. A dog crashed into a car, the breath driven from her body. "Your mine, Indigo!" The Husky, Indigo smiled. "You asked for it." Just as a large German Shephard launched himself at her, she ducked, and he went past her, slamming into the car. "Nice try, Bone-head."
The newcomer, Bone, snarled and whipped around. Indigo was so annoying! They were both clearly hurt and bruised. Just as he prepared himself, something hurled itself into his side, driving the wind from him and knocking him over. A Blue Tick mix held Bone down and bit into his neck. Bone snarled and whined, before landing a well placed kick and fleeing. "Retreat!" He snarled, and let out a gruff howl.
Several dogs lifted their heads at their leaders call, and fought their way towards him, as the skirmish came to an end. The Northern Pack dogs looked slightly ruffled as the others retreated. Was this battle so easily won? Indigo threw up her head and let out a full-blown howl. The others soon took up the call, and yips were thrown in." We are victorious again, Indigo! When will that clumsy Bone-head learn that we ain't gonna give him what he wants?" A dark red Irish-setter trotted up, his left ear torn and bleeding. "Seetus!" The Setter lowered himself. "Sorry..." With a single sigh, the Husky turned and started trotting towards camp. " You did well, Peril. You will have something to tell Thistle when we reach the den." The Blue Tick from earlier had trotted up, a gleam in his eyes. There were very few pure bloods left.
Most were mix breeds or loners that had been picked up. Survival was hard during these times. The cold of dead-tree still covered the land. It was vital to hunt together, and go after the big prey. The scattered metal beasts provided a good place to hide for little creatures, and the wide paths of concrete gave away the sound of a wandering doe, every hoofbeat giving way to a heartbeat, and to the next meal.
Indigo fell into a steady lope, making sure to skirt the obstacles. Her territory rode up on the plateaus of the high lands, just on the edge of the City. This area was one of the ones in better condition, but some of the ground was shaky, but not much. She weaved her comrades around a large metal beast hurled on its side, its face still seeming to snarl. There were many of these, and they were a form of transportation for the beast that used to wander this land, long ago. "Ray-road!" The dogs, stepping in Indigo's footprints, followed her in a straight line, no dogs paw out of place.
